LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

DR. JON KULAGA

In my home office, centered between the two windows that look out onto campus, I have a framed quote from C.S. Lewis that reads,

Look for Christ/and you will find Him

And with Him/Everything else

It is a reminder to me that everything we do at Indiana Wesleyan University is centered in Christ.

The first five books of the Hebrew Bible are referred to as the Torah – the middle book being many people’s least favorite of all – Leviticus. Many scholars make the case that the Torah has a chiastic structure, which means the most important part is not the beginning or the end, but the middle. Whereas Leviticus is the middle of the Torah, it is the most important part.

Additionally, many scholars argue that book of Leviticus itself has a chiastic structure, therefore, the most important material in Leviticus is in the middle. And what we find in the middle of Leviticus is God’s instructions on atonement and holiness. Leviticus is the center of the Torah, and the heart of Leviticus is atonement and holiness.

A few millennia after Leviticus, many American holiness writers made the same argument about Christianity itself. In his work The Central Idea of Christianity, Rev. Jesse T. Peck makes the argument that it is the will of God to make the child of God perfect, therefore, “it is settled by the authority [of Scripture], that holiness is the central idea of Christianity.”

The birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus is the central focal point of history. Christ and his atonement are the central idea of both the Old and New Testament. The Work of Christ as revealed in the Word of God is at the core of everything.

Look for Christ – and you will find Him, and with Him you will get everything else.

At Indiana Wesleyan University we are unapologetically Christ-centered – because faith, reason and reality demand we accept no other alternative.

In Memoriam: Lana Shoaf (1977-2024)

Lana Shoaf served as the Director of Communications at Indiana Wesleyan University from April 2023 until November 21, when she entered her eternal home with the Lord.

Lana exemplified what it means to be a true World-Changer. She had a remarkable gift for seeing life through the lens of stories, a reflection of God’s unique calling upon her. In her job, Lana passionately championed the art of storytelling, uncovering the heart and passion of every faculty member, staff member, administrator, and student she encountered. She had an extraordinary ability to craft and share those stories in ways that inspired and shone brightly.

Even during her battle with cancer in recent months, Lana remained steadfast in her positivity and hope. Through it all, she directed others to God and His greater story, even as she trusted Him with her own.

Her leadership in IWU’s marketing department and her contributions to the last several issues of The Triangle leave a significant void among her colleagues. Yet, her legacy will live on as they continue to pursue and celebrate the stories that were so central to her mission.

Lana is survived by her loving husband, Tim, and their five children—Althea, Grace, Jackson, Josie, and Godfrey—who cherished her deeply. While we grieve her loss, we do so with hope, confident in the promise that we will one day see Lana again.
