LANTERN
LIGHTING THE WAY FOR DISCIPLESHIP & MINISTRY
Lighting the Way for Discipleship & Ministry
In the ever-evolving landscape of theological education and ministry tools, Wesley Seminary launched a trusted resource hub and named it “Lantern.” Birthed from a vision to empower discipleship, equip for ministry, and inspire church leaders, Lantern stands as a testament to Wesley Seminary’s commitment to the Church and innovative approach to filling information and education gaps.
Lantern began with a Lilly Grant project undertaken by Wesley Seminary as they envisioned a place where knowledge and inspiration converged for church leaders. They wanted a place where theological academia and the practicalities of everyday ministry meet in a trusted and safe place. Grounded in a mission to create original resources, curate trusted content, collaborate with partners, and bring together leaders, Lantern is a holistic solution to the challenges faced by pastors and lay leaders of the Church.
At its core, Lantern embodies the metaphor of light, a symbol deeply ingrained within the fabric of Church history and theology. Matt LeRoy, teaching pastor at Love Chapel Hill and collaborator with Lantern, explains, “We knew it needed to reach beyond Wesley Seminary and into the broader church and culture. So, we chose a name that could reach beyond us. Lantern embodies the persistent symbol of light throughout Scripture, from the dawning word of Creation to the City whose light is the Lord Himself. The poets call the Scriptures a light for our feet and a lamp for the path. Jesus says he is the Light of the world, and in a shocking move, calls us to be the same. The Holy Spirit is even described as a flame within us, shining through us. This is why we selected Lantern as our name and defining metaphor. Not because we claim to be the source of the Light. But because we're called to carry the Light together.”

One of Lantern’s benefits and a focus for the creators of Lantern is creating and producing original content. For example, they’ve produced a video series called “Foundations” that explores the fundamentals of Christianity through topics like theology, Scripture, and Church history. These courses are taught by esteemed professors and experts, engaging audiences in a way that offers a transformative learning experience for individuals, small groups, and entire congregations.
Lantern also presents “The Field”, which is a series of short videos featuring ministry practitioners who offer insights into various aspects of ministry like worship, preaching, student ministry, and discipleship culture. Another exciting offering is “The Legacy Collection” video series, which pays homage to influential figures like Dr. John and Vera Mae Perkins, Justo Gonzalez and Catherine Gunsalus, and Dr. Jo Anne and Wayne Lyon, highlighting their invaluable contributions to the Church and society.
These resources best serve pastors navigating the complexities of grassroots ministry, disciples seeking growth in diverse endeavors, and students committed to ongoing theological learning. It serves as a gift from Wesley Seminary to the Church with far-reaching impact.
The partnership between Lantern and Indiana Wesleyan University’s Wesley Seminary creates fresh avenues for students enrolled in classes through Wesley Seminary, IWU-Marion, and IWU- National & Global. It also serves as a platform for faculty expertise, a rich and deep resource among the IWU faculty across all three entities.
The collaborative project stands as an innovative effort to meet the challenges pastors and lay-leaders face today. The information hub exists as a free resource to build a bridge of connection to Wesley Seminary through exposure, admissions, and ongoing opportunities for theological education. Ultimately, it will bring people to a better understanding of Christ through resources and inspiring content, blending theology and creativity for an innovative approach to nurture a deeper love of God in all.
